Winter 2023 in Mijas Pueblo

It’s been a triumphant year for Mijas this 2023. With so much going on in and around the municipality, life in Mijas for its 90,000 residents has never been better.

In this latest blog post, we’re looking at some of the latest news from across the municipality that demonstrates exactly why Mijas Pueblo is an excellent place to both live and visit.

The Senda Litoral in Mijas Costa renews its Blue Flag

Mijas has proudly renewed its prestigious Blue Flag Path badge this December, an annual accolade given by the Environmental and Consumer Education Association (ADEAC).

This recognition demonstrates Mijas’ dedication to the preservation and revival of trails, as well as the promoting of education and sustainable enjoyment of our natural surroundings. The Senda Litoral is perhaps one of the area’s most popular destinations when it comes to relaxing and exploring, as well as connecting bike riders and pedestrians in Mijas to the municipalities of both Marbella and Fuengirola.

Spain currently has 128 trails in 115 municipalities, but only two of them hold the Blue Flag Trail Award – Mijas and Nerja!

The popular Marenostrum Fuengirola festival has been nominated in 6 categories at the 2023 Iberian Festival Awards, a body that recognises the achievements of festivals across Spain and Portugal.

This year’s festival featured a star-studded bill of both Spanish and International performers, including the likes of Robbie Williams and UB40, at the historic Sohail Castle site in Fuengirola. 2023’s edition of the festival is said to have attracted close to 190,000 people to the area, including people from the UK, USA and even Argentina, generating revenue of around 30 million euros for the local area.

Marenostrum Fuengirola is in the running for the following award categories: Best Major Festival, Best Touristic Promotion, Best Venue, Contribution to Sustainability, Contribution to Equality and Best Cultural Programme.

90 Day Ruling for British Second Homeowners

Following the news that France had submitted a new bill amendment that would scrap the 90-day rule for British second homeowners in France, and instead offer owners an automatic right to a long-stay visa, Spain’s Minister of Tourism, Hector Gómez, spoke out in support of the potential law change and how it could inspire Spain to do the same.

He confirmed that he had met with Jennifer Anderson, director of consular affairs, and the UK Foreign Office, during which Gómez said that they discussed the matter of British tourists in Spain. Gómez confirmed that it is in ‘Spain’s interest’ to lobby the EU for an exception to the 90-day rule, but that the solution “must come from them.

As of December 2023, British second homeowners in Spain are limited to just 90 days in the Schengen Area in every 180, meaning that many owners opt to spend 3 months in Spain, followed by 3 months out to stay on the right side of the immigration law.
