Mijas with its first female Mayor Ana Mata

In November 2023, Ana Mata, of the Partido Popular (PP) was elected as Mijas’ first female mayor. The resounding victory marks not only a personal triumph for Ana but also a significant milestone for the community she now leads.

In the municipal elections on May 28th, Mata joined the PP (Partido Popular) lists for the Mijas Town Hall, securing the position as number six. Her entrance marked a significant shift in Mijas’ political landscape, resulting in a successful no-confidence motion against the previous socialist mayor, Josele González, who assumed office on the 17th of June 2023.

Mayoral Duties

Ana Mata’s rise to the mayor’s office is a testament to her dedication to the people of Mijas. Born and raised in the area, she has always been deeply connected to it. Having started her political career early on, Ana’s ascent to the mayoral position reflects her tireless efforts and the trust she has earned from the residents. Her vision for Mijas is one of progress, inclusivity, and sustainable development. Ana envisions a future where the municipality thrives economically while preserving its unique charm and natural beauty.

As the first female mayor in Mijas, Mata faces both the challenges of the present and the responsibility to shape the future. The municipality looks to her for leadership that transcends party lines and unites the community in a shared vision. Ana’s commitment to transparent governance and community engagement sets a promising tone for the years ahead. Her historic win paves the way for a new era in Mijas, where diversity and representation are not only celebrated but taken further to local governance.

Mijas’ Future

The journey that led Ana Mata to this milestone serves as a reminder that change is not only possible but achievable through dedication, passion, and a genuine connection to the people she serves. Mijas has taken a bold step forward, and Ana Mata is with its people, ready to guide her hometown into a promising future.

Having stated at a recent public event that “Mijas is destined to be one of the great references in southern Europe”, Ana Mata believes that the municipality has the potential to be the nerve centre of economic development on the Costa del Sol. She continued, saying “It is a perfect place to live and visit, of course, but also to invest and undertake.”

The area is, without a doubt, one of the most vibrant communities on the Costa del Sol – a melting pot of nationalities and cultures that makes the area so desirable to the hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. We are certainly looking forward to seeing how our new mayor will help to grow, develop and continue to nurture Mijas in the coming months!
