A Breath of Fresh Air for Mijas
Mijas Town Council has unveiled an ambitious project aimed at transforming the town’s streets into cooler, more pedestrian-friendly spaces. In a bid to combat the summer temperatures and encourage more people to walk rather than drive, the council is installing sun shades throughout the town.
Sun Shades in Over 30 Locations
These sun canopies will be strategically placed in more than 30 streets and public spaces, particularly where the architectural layout intensifies the heat. By providing much-needed shade, the project aims to protect residents and visitors from the sun’s harsh rays and make walking around town a more pleasant experience.
The initiative will see sun shades installed on numerous streets and plazas in Mijas Pueblo and all Mijas areas, including:
- Calle Málaga
- Los Caños
- Avenida del Compás
- Avenida Virgen de la Peña
- Plaza Virgen de la Peña
- Plaza de la Libertad
Children’s parks in Valtocado, Rubén de la Alquería, and the Calisthenics park on Calle Tamisa are also on the list. This plan includes Las Lagunas and La Cala, ensuring a widespread impact across the municipality.
Aiming for Long-Term Benefits
Covering almost 5,000 square meters, these sun shades are more than a temporary fix. The council hopes to expand the coverage each year, creating a cooler, more comfortable environment that boosts commerce and tourism. By making the streets more walkable, the initiative not only aims to reduce car usage but also to foster a more vibrant and lively community.
Walking Towards a Cooler Future
Mijas’ new sun shade project represents a forward-thinking approach to urban planning. By addressing the challenges posed by extreme heat, the town is taking significant steps towards creating a more enjoyable and sustainable environment for all. As these sun canopies start to take shape, residents and visitors alike can look forward to cooler strolls through the charming streets of Mijas.
